Madhu Madha Church

Madhu Madha Church

The shrine of our Lady of Madhu is a Roman Catholic Marian shrine. The Madhu Matha statue was at Manthai in early days. In order to save the statue in 1670, the people brought it to the thick jungle at Maruthamadhu. It was hidden under a tree. Then a small shed was put up for the statue. Gradually it became a very famous shrine. The 400 years old Madu church festival is celebrated annually on July 02nd and August 15th. There are accommodation facilities with nearly 300 rooms. Travel from Madawachchiya along Thalaimannar – Madawachchiya road (A14) to Madhu Junction – then take Madhu Road (B 378) to Madhu Church.
